XL Establishes Rocky Mountain Presence with Two New Appointments in Denver

 — DENVER, October 20, 2011 – The Insurance segment of XL Group plc (“XL”) (NYSE: XL) today announced the expansion of its North America Property & Casualty team in the Rocky Mountain region with the appointments of Gregory Melton as Senior Property Underwriter and Stephen Sanford as Vice President and Business Development Manager, both based in Denver.

Commenting on Mr. Melton’s appointment, Wade Pitman, Western Regional Executive for XL’s North America Property unit, said: “We are honored to have Greg join us in Denver and are excited about the opportunity this gives XL to serve our brokers locally with someone who has a proven track record of providing excellent customer service and finding creative solutions for our customers. Greg’s experience in the large property arena as well as his time as both a Risk Manager and broker give him a unique perspective. He’s able to understand the needs of our brokers and customers in a way that others can’t and he just has a wonderful way of working with people. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Greg at both Ironshore and Zurich, and also enjoyed servicing his account when he was the Assistant Risk Manager at Nissan.”

Reporting to Mr. Pitman in Los Angeles, Mr. Melton will be responsible for underwriting large property risks throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Mr. Melton joins XL from the Ironshore Insurance Company where he served as Regional Property Underwriting Manager. He also honed his property risk management skills with positions at Zurich Insurance Company, Lexington, AIG Worldsource and Marsh USA. As Assistant Risk Manager, Treasury and Risk Management, he managed multiline risks management programs including a global property program, alternative risk financing and workers’ compensation for Nissan. Mr. Melton is a graduate of St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. He holds both Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Associate in Commercial Underwriting (ACU) designations.

Stephen Sanford reports to Frank Soldano, Western Regional Executive for XL’s Sales and Regional Management team. Mr. Sanford is responsible for business development activities in Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Idaho and New Mexico.

According to Mr. Soldano, “I am very pleased and excited to have Steve join us in Denver. With more than 30 years of experience in the insurance industry, he brings to us a wealth of sales experience in both the brokerage community and the underwriting side of our business. His personal commitment to the industry is long-standing and we have high expectations that Steve will expand our writings in this territory through his solid knowledge of the brokerage needs.”

Before to joining XL Insurance, Mr. Sanford was a Managing Director and broker at Aon Corporation. Previous to his tenure at Aon, he was Vice President of Business Development for Hartford Financial Products. In addition to his broker experience, Mr. Sanford held underwriting positions with Traveler’s Insurance.
